Heading off on holidays to exotic destinations thousands of miles away is all very well, but if we’re being honest, choosing to holiday at home is looking awfully appealing all of a sudden. Luckily for us at Diamond Beach we don’t have to venture too far as some of the best beaches in Europe are right on our doorstep. We wanted to share with you why Devon is the place to visit in 2017.
Who needs the Bahamas when Devon has some of the most stunning beaches in the world?

From the Gold Award-winning Woolacombe beach in North Devon – a three-mile long stretch of golden sand revered for its water quality.

To the jewel’s of the south coast:

South Sands: This beach is set in the glamorous resort of Salcombe: Half a mile South of North Sands you will find this beach with excellent facilities. You can take the Seasonal South Sands Ferry from Whitestrand Quay in Salcombe town centre. South Sands is home to sea Kayak Salcombe, from whom you can hire kayaks; stand up paddleboards and more. Bo’s beach café provides refreshments, so there is everything you need for a whole day out.

Blackpool sands: A 10 minute drive from Diamond Beach HQ this is one of our favourites. Set in a sheltered bay surrounded by evergreens and pines, its one of South Devon’s most beautiful natural treasures. An award winning ‘Blue flag’ family beach with turquoise blue sea giving it an almost Mediterranean feel. Its also part of South Devon’s heritage coast, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The beach also has a fabulous café and restaurant: The Venus café, which serves only organic and locally produced food.

Bantham Beach: South Devon’s premier surfing beach. Nestling deep in the South Hams at the mouth of the little known river Avon, it offers beautiful scenery with panoramic views over Bigbury Bay and the famous Burgh Island. Bigbury bay itself is a shallow sandy bay, which makes Bantham an ideal beach for swimming and paddling for all the family. Bantham also has a reputation as one of the best surf beaches in Devon. It’s also a favourite of Diamond Beaches founder Stacey who regularly goes surfing here. Why not try it for your self and book in for a lesson with the Bantham surfing Academy, who will provide professional tuition and coaching for beginners through to advanced levels.

If your feeling peckish then the Gastrobus situated in the car park is open daily and serves delicious, locally sourced food, gourmet burgers, freshly made baps, freshly baked cakes, luxurious ice cream and a selection of hot and cold drinks. The Sloop Inn pub is steeped in tradition and is just a short walk from the beach. It has an excellent reputation for cuisine.

Thurlestone Beach: One of our all time favourite beaches. This beach is perfect if you want to enjoy a little slice of South Devon without the noise and bustle of the usual summer crowds. Thurlestone Beach is made up of two main beaches- the smaller one next to the golf club while a larger beach is slightly further along the coast towards South Milton.

The beach has been awarded from the marine conservation society thanks to its clear, clean waters.

For somewhere to eat try the ever-popular Beach House which is already cited by many in the media as one of the UK’s top seaside venues. This laidback foodie destination is a must with lots of easy sharing dishes on the menu, so everyone can get involved. It’s also a beautiful spot to watch the sun go down with a cold glass of Rose in hand. Bliss!

Another excellent place to eat is the Village Inn pub, which is adjacent to the Thurestone hotel. With bags of character and delicious gastropub fare, The village Inn is everything you could hope for in one of Devon’s classic traditional pubs. With an added modern charm of its own.
