What’s hot in the med?


Previously tricky to get to, Almeria will open up to the UK once BA starts flights from Heathrow on March 27th. By then its warm enough to swim in the sea, and some of Spain’s best beaches are in the provinces Cabo de Gata nature reserve, with superb diving. Or just trawl the city’s traditional bars, where you still get free tapas with your beer.


The stylish residents of Greece’s second city, Thessaloniki, have been holidaying on the nearby lush Halkidiki peninsula for decades- and we’ve finally cottoned on to these appealing surroundings.


Call it the Mamma Mia! Effect the Croatian island of Vis expects a booking boom this July when the movie sequel comes out. Follow Streep et al to the beautiful beaches of Komiza, the pretty seaside streets of Vis town, and Barjoska bays hideaway waters.


The lush island and its ultra modern cities are now way easier to reach, with non-stop UK flights. A bite sized blend of Chinas and Japans best bits- hot springs, forest monasteries, sky scrapers and fantastic food- Taiwan has been overlooked for so long but its ready for takeoff.


Argentina’s spoilt for urban flavor with its edgy, foodie capital, Buenos Aries, get on trend at the new president, with its secret bar-within-a bar. But the buzz for 2018 is all about the unexplored northern landscapes, especially the ibera wetlands.



Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruises all launch wow-y megaships in 2018. Top spot goes to the 2,900-passenger Celebrity edge, with chic Kelly Hoppen interiors, a rooftop garden and gorgeous split level villa. As river cruise passengers get younger, upmarket uniworld launches a new line just for 21 to 45 year olds. U by Uniworld will offer beer tasting, bike rides and city nightlife tours.


New direct flights from Virgin and Thomas cook will make the A-list island more accessible in 2018, while in May, Virgin holidays opens a ‘departure beach’ its customers will be able to check in for their flight home, drop bags and kick back until a transfer whisks them to the airport. There’s a blingy new resort, too: Sandals Royal Barbados.


The big buzz is BA’s new direct flights from Heathrow. And a scattering of chic new stays means luxe lovers don’t have to hire a whole island, as Kate and Wills did. Most glam of the bunch is the serene six senses zill pasyon (sixsenses.com), with villas carved into the rocks and rope bridges leading to a spa. Also new for 2018 is a Ritz-Carlton in the sainte Anne marine nature reserve.
